I was so excited to have the opportunity to participate in Washington Post’s House Calls this week. It is a weekly column that allows Interior Designers to present solutions to reader’s home challenges. My challenge focused on the Pool Room of the Ayers family. Their existing space already had beautiful architectural features like the exposed beam wall and the hardwood floors which really helped drive the design. I really enjoyed designing their space and hope the family enjoyed my suggestions. Please check out the full article here.
Recently I have been admiring gold gilded mirrors. Gilded mirrors originate from the art of gilding. Gilding goes back to ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. Craftsmen would carve ornate designs out of wood and would also attach raised wooden elements. A gilt paint (typically gold or silver) was added to their finished designs. Gilded mirrors were popular in the 18th century and were hung throughout the house. Gilded mirrors can elevate the design factor to a simple room.
Target and Nate Berkus do it again! It is amazing how much affordable decor you can find in Target. I picked up the Arrowhead Accent Rug (2′x3′) for our bathroom. Our bathroom is black and white and I thought this rug would be a warm addition. It’s 100% wool and feels great on your bare feet. It comes in a variety of sizes too. Thanks Nate!
I was so excited to hear that Chase’s room would be featured on Apartment Therapy today. I loved designing Chase’s room and it has become a room that the whole family truly enjoys. Check out the complete article here.
Happy New Year! The holidays really came upon us fast and didn’t stay long. The Underwoods had an awesome Christmas this year especially since it was Chase’s first. Preston received more than enough gifts and Chase was most impressed with the tissue paper. We were able to spend the holidays with lots of friends and family. We hosted our 2nd annual Holiday Cocktail Party. Lots of great food and company really made the party a success. Preston and I also got to attend a Holiday Reception at the White House with a visit from the President and First Lady.
I am energized about 2014. I have been busy preparing for a new launch this year and I am excited to introduce my new design service RDConnect. RDConnect was established to give you the service of having your own personal Designer to answer your design questions. There are times when you just want to ask a question about a paint color, where to hang artwork or even how to arrange your furniture. The service is intended to be personal and a convenient way to get the help you need. So I welcome you to RDConnect.
You have probably noticed the big trend in gold decor. Gold has definitely become an obsession of mine too and when thinking of this year’s holiday tables why not add a bit of glam with your flatware. Gold flatware is elegant and a bit unexpected. This is not your grandmom’s flatware from back in the day (although there are probably some vintage styles that could give the more up to date a run for its money). I have been keeping my eyes open at my local thrift shops for some gold finds but haven’t come across any yet…

- Still obsessed with Christmas ornament shopping
- I have been thinking a lot about adding more architectural details to the interior of our house (Need to get some samples).
- Trying out our new rowing machine (I have to get rid of this baby weight).
- I would love to have a velvet sofa for the holidays…
This past weekend I was able to spend time with my dear friends and linesisters from NCCU. The weather was so nice we were able to enjoy some of the time outside. We visited some of the national monuments in the city. What a beautiful sight to see the monuments among the trees that are changing colors.
